Learn, Educate, Serve!



If you are interested in helping to close the health disparity gap, gaining the “hands on” experience everyone’s looking for AND receive money for post secondary education, the North Florida Health Corps may be for you!



The North Florida Health Corps is an AmeriCorps initiative designed to help reduce health disparities and improve the access and quality of healthcare to traditionally underserved communities through education, outreach, and service activities.



Candidates are selected as Corps members, matched with local community organizations. The full time term of service is 46 weeks and we will start a class in September and another in November. The paid stipend is $11,100 per term, and members receive health insurance, and loan forbearance while serving. Upon successful completion members also receive $4,725 in an Education award.



We have several great opportunities for National Service still available including:



• Serving with the Institutional Medicine Division of the Duval County Health Dept. Service experience includes: Working with Community Transition Team, working with inmates to transition into the community. Working with Health Assessment Team to conduct HIV/STD counseling and testing. Learn about accreditation processes, conduct training and health education to inmates and staff.



• Serving with the Northeast Florida Healthy Start Coalition KidCare insurance program. Service experience includes: Educating prospective partners and KidCare applicants on the KidCare program and maintain community partnerships. Participate in outreach activities to promote KidCare as needed.



• Serving with the IM Sulzbacher Center for the Homeless. Service experience includes: Screening participants for Housing programs. Conducting Life Skill classes to program participants. Accompany participants to community based events. Connecting participants to Health Services.



• Serving with the Duval County Health Department Healthy Jacksonville and Injury Prevention programs. Service experience includes: Plan schedule and teach Child Safety Seat classes. Plan events to focus on health promotion. Be responsible for specific activities such as health education, health promotion, patient navigation and community outreach. Health topics include: diabetes, cancer, asthma, and obesity prevention.



• Serving with the Health Planning Council of Northeast Florida. Service experience includes: Assist in the Immunization Outreach program by assisting medical practices in using the shot registry, assist in the delivery of flu shot clinics, collect and input data related to immunizations, participate in the Duval County Immunization Task Force. Provide health education on immunizations and diabetes. Help organize flu vaccinations and hepatitis vaccinations. Option to work on the HIV/STD testing mobile unit.



• Serving with the Duval County Health Department Division of Community Nutrition Services. Service experience includes: Providing nutrition education to underserved pregnant women and young parents. Provide immunization referrals for children who are enrolled in WIC and whose immunization records are not current. Developing systems of referrals between WIC and other health care or social service organizations.



Members have additional opportunities by receiving in-service trainings and participating in Corps meetings, Service Projects and Member Committees!
